REVIEW :
'Warm-Up Show' for Guns N' Roses By BEN RATLIFF New York Times Published: May 13, 2006
Rock and roll audiences want to identify with the guy singing the song; they need to, in fact. But you’d be hard-pressed to prove that the crowd at the Hammerstein Ballroom on Friday night was identifying with W. Axl Rose. What does he represent, at this stage of the game? Survival? Re-invention? Creative control? The tortured artist? The persistence of the yowl? If the spirit of his age resides in him, his long postponement of an infamous album has diluted that spirit somewhat.
But if the physical reality of Mr. Rose - dressed L.A. style in a leather shirt and jeans and wearing a large silver cross, his hair corn-rowed and pulled back - wasn’t an easy figure to identify with, his voice and body language did the job instead. When he sang “Paradise City,” the crowd adopted a yowl in kind; when he danced in his undulating movements, like the letter S turning itself inside out, the men and women in the audience involuntarily moved that way too.
Friday night’s concert was the first of four Guns N’ Roses shows at Hammerstein Ballroom. On stage, Mr. Rose called them “warm-up shows” for the band’s European tour, which begins May 25 in Madrid. It’s fair to assume that the large-theater shows will have clearer sound and more effective stagecraft; Mr. Rose’s voice sounded strong, even in his highest nasal shrieks, but the band wasn’t using the warm-up time to experiment. The set list of the two-hours-plus show, complete with flash pots and confetti, came pretty close to what an only slightly different version of the band was playing four years ago, on its last tour.
Mr. Rose is the only original member left in the quintessential ‘80s hard-rock band, and this has been the case since 1997. The newest of the seven musicians backing up Mr. Rose on Friday, one of its three guitarists, is Ron Thal, also known as Bumblefoot. (One of his guitars has been designed to look like the bottom of a foot, with bumblebee stripes.) He takes up the role of the pyrotechnic shredder, vacated in 2004 by the guitarist Buckethead. At certain points in the show, including a few discontinuous unaccompanied solos, he accelerated to impressively fast chromatic runs; he also played some lavish, Hendrix-influenced blues language. Why this band’s gut-level songs now require the ornamentation of a wizardly guitarist at all remains unclear. It makes the band more atemporal, more Vegas-y, than necessary.
It was the group’s principal guitarist, Robin Finck, who made the sweetest and most grounded music of the night, and seemed most comfortable at work. An off-and-on member of the band for nine years now, Mr. Finck assumed most of the lines in the old songs formerly played by the guitarist Slash. But when he improvised, he spun out simple patterns, shaking the guitar’s neck and getting warmth and resonance out of each note or chord; his own unaccompanied solo, just before the concert’s final number, was a beautifully coherent, non-shredding couple of minutes, the best of the less-familiar music played in the show. He gave himself to the crowd, even literally, diving in to the audience three times.
The less-familiar songs were, actually, kind of familiar. That infamous, postponed Guns N’ Roses album, of course, is “Chinese Democracy,” which has been in the making for much of the last decade, and still has not been scheduled for release. Some of its songs included in the concert—“The Blues,” “Better,” “Madagascar,” “Chinese Democracy,” “There Was a Time,” and “IRS”—are easy enough to find on the internet, in leaked demos and bootlegged live performances. And in the concert, the new songs distinguished themselves visually as well as sonically, with serious-looking video backdrops: stained-glass details, religious portraiture, Martin Luther King speeches.
The crowd didn’t go nuts for them. Most of the new songs are dystopian, tense, portentous, finally a bit inconclusive; they dabble in electronic rhythms, big keyboard sounds and droning repetition. They didn’t produce much catharsis, on stage or in the audience. “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Patience,” on the other hand, were among the set’s old songs that motored along on earthy, meaty riffs, and provoked the fully expected but still astonishing spectacle of a full house roaring along with every word.
Guns N’ Roses continue at Hammerstein Ballroom on May 14, 15, and 17.

GN'R was originally scheduled to take the stage at 10pm, but that was later changed to 11pm. Regardless, they didn't hit the stage until midnight. Fans become restless and start throwing chairs before Guns come on, but security is tight. The show ends with technical difficulties, the original cause of the delay at the start of the show. GN'R play for two and a half hours.

LONDON TIMES REVIEW Thursday, June 8th
Hammersmith Apollo, London, June 7
Welcome to the jungle: three and a half hours after the doors of the venue open, the main act shows no sign of taking the stage. The mixed crowd - virginal looking young men, thirtysomethings with anachronistic haircuts - are clearly displeased with the delay. They boo between the rock anthems blaring out of the PA, long after support act Avenged Sevenfold have finished their set.
They don’t know that a certain W. Axl Rose, lead singer and sole remaining original member of Guns N’ Roses, has issued an ultimatum. “We know he’s in the building,” says one of the backstage managers at the Hammersmith Apollo, as if this is an achievement in itself. “He’s just insisting he needs two masseuses for a ‘Deep Heat massage’ before he goes on stage. He fired both his personal masseuses this morning. He’s also complaining because his personal hairdresser (from Africa) couldn’t enter the country because of visa issues. But there’s not much we can do about that.” As an excuse for keeping 5,000 paying customers waiting, it’s up there with throwing a hissy fit because M&Ms of the wrong colour have been found in the dressing room bowl. “This might be the worst act I’ve dealt with,” says the exasperated concierge. “It’s certainly up there with Velvet Revolver (the band comprising of Rose’s former GnR bandmates) who delayed a gig for 90 minutes until we got them a homemade Shepherd’s Pie. If this goes on much longer, I think there might be a riot... excuse me,” he breaks off, one ear pressed to his walkie-talkie: “a fight just broke out in the stalls...”
For the self-proclaimed “Most Dangerous Band In The World,” a riot due to a delayed or cancelled show is not without precedent. But then, for Guns N’ Roses, not many aspects of rock’n’roll behaviour are without precedent. Rose presumably found someone to rub him up the right way, even at such short notice: when he does finally make it on stage just before 11pm, with the 2006 version of GnR striking up Welcome to the Jungle, the weary audience is immediately roused, and immediately forgiving.
This London appearance, a warm-up for their headlining slot at the Download festival, in Donington Park, follows dates in New York as the band’s first gigs since 2002. The seasoned line-up assembled by Rose - Tommy Stinson (bass), Richard Fortus (guitar), Robin Finck (guitar), Chris Pitman (keyboard), Dizzy Reed (keyboard), “Brain” (drums) and new guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (who only joined the band last month) - confidently swap the riffs of a string of old favourites to open the show, including It’s So Easy, Mr Brownstone, Live And Let Die, and Sweet Child O' Mine.
In a series of outfits and sunglasses, with diamond jewellery and teeth flashing, Rose appears very much at home as the grand rock showman - except for his red and yellow dreadlocks and ginger facial hair; they merely make him look like a cross between Mick Hucknall and Metallica's James Hetfield. The 44-year-old’s reputed face-lifts are indicated, too, by his pinched features and unblinking eyes, and he’s sweating profusely as early as the second song as he pirouettes and canters restlessly around the tiered stage. Yet his voice – always a fantastic blend of catty screech and resonant bellow – appears untainted by the ensuing years of ultimate rock star indulgence and prima donna delay. The world is still waiting, a reputed $13 million later, for Chinese Democracy, the album his band started recording in 1998. It’s now scheduled for release this autumn, but that’s not a date to hold your breath over.
Two tracks from the new album, Madagascar and Better, exhibit militaristic drums and a certain nu-metal swagger, but in terms of both the audience’s reaction and the band’s energy, they pale in comparison with the ensuing You Could Be Mine, and a drawn-out Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. Another new song, IRS, ostensibly a bombastic swipe at an anonymous former lover, namechecks the President, the FBI and the taxman as co-conspirators, but is merely an extension of Rose’s own persecution complex, summarised in the rebel yell of Out Ta Get Me.
Prone to virtuosic, if overlong, fret-tapping solo spots, the Axl Rose Backing Band (for that is what GnR amounts to these days) seem less comfortable playing the sluggish new material than their own guitar improvisations on Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful, or the familiar riffs of Night Train and Paradise City, which are rapturously received and accompanied by exploding fireworks and flame-belching cannons. Former Skid Row frontman, Sebastian Bach, comes on, hair akimbo, for a brief cameo appearance during My Michelle. When November Rain reaches its guitar-led epilogue, it is hard to deny that Guns N’ Roses are back - for the moment at least – there’s certainly enough old-school entertainment value from these familiar hits to justify the Apollo staying open past its usual curfew. But as the crowd starts to thin out before the clock strikes 1am, the occasion seems far from riotous. In fact, it's more like a karaoke singalong.

Show was postponed until 1st July, 2006.
Press release from Sanctuary Management:
Guns N' Babies!
Guns N' Roses have been forced to postpone their show in
Zurich at the Hallenstadion this evening the 21st of June, 2006. Their drummer
Brain aka Bryan Mantia has had to return to San Francisco earlier than
scheduled to be with his pregnant wife. The band have been travelling with
understudy drummer Frank Ferrer and he will be ready to step in when the tour
continues as scheduled on Saturday with their next show at Belgium's Graspop
Festival.
It is expected that Brain will return to the tour in
approximately 2 weeks time. The band had a phenomenal show at Bercy in Paris
last night which they consider to be the best of the tour to date. During the
exuberant performance guitarist Robin Finck pulled his hamstring but will
benefit from the extra day of rest and will be ready for Saturday. The
Hallenstadion show in Zurich will now take place on the 1st of July and all
tickets are valid.
Guns N' Roses apologize to their Swiss fans for any
inconvenience and look forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks.

Press release from Sanctuary Management:
Guns N' Babies!
Guns N' Roses have been forced to postpone their show in
Zurich at the Hallenstadion this evening the 21st of June, 2006. Their drummer
Brain aka Bryan Mantia has had to return to San Francisco earlier than scheduled
to be with his pregnant wife. The band have been travelling with understudy
drummer Frank Ferrer and he will be ready to step in when the tour continues as
scheduled on Saturday with their next show at Belgium's Graspop Festival.
Guns N' Roses apologise to their Swiss fans for any
inconvenience and look forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks.

PHOTO GALLERY of 2006 SHOWS
From the venue website prior to show :
Guns N' Roses plus special guests Sebastian Bach & Bullet For My Valentine
They're back!!! After taking over New York and completing
four sellout nights at the Hammerstein Ballroom and selling out a very special
show at London’s Hammersmith Apollo (June 7th) Guns N’ Roses announce their
first full UK tour since 1993 and they will be stopping off at the Hallam FM
Arena on Tuesday 18th July.
Please be aware that tickets for Guns N' Roses are no
longer being posted out.
Tickets will be available for collection 24 hours after
your booking has been made and must be collected by the credit card holder who
made the booking.
Guns N' Roses - whose shows at New York's Hammerstein
Ballroom sold out in less than 3 minutes - have reclaimed the throne that was
always theirs. From stellar reviews to audience adulation, Guns N' Roses' New
York shows proved that they are back in a big way.
Concert goers weren't let down as Axl Rose and band
mates Tommy Stinson (bass), Richard Fortus (guitar), Robin Finck (guitar), Chris
Pitman (keyboard), Dizzy Reed (keyboard), Brain (drums) and new guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot"
Thal (who has only been in the band for two weeks!) burned through Guns N' Roses
classics such as "Welcome to the Jungle," "Paradise City," "My Michelle," "Mr.
Brownstone," "November Rain" and "Sweet Child O' Mine." The final show at
Hammerstein found the band joined by one time Guns' guitarist Izzy Stradlin on
"Think About You," "Patience" and "Night Train,".
Over the four nights, audiences were also treated to
nearly half of the band's upcoming new album, Chinese Democracy, with live
performances of "Chinese Democracy," "Better," "There was a Time," "Madagascar,"
"IRS" and "The Blues."
The four shows were the talk of New York City, with
fans and famous faces such as Matthew Perry, Mickey Rourke, Drea De Matteo,
Lenny Kravitz, Jamie Lynn Sigler, Fred Durst, Sebastian Bach, Ethan Hawke, Jay
Z, Jimmy Fallon, Maxwell and Sean Penn to name a few, paying homage to one of
the greatest bands in Rock n' Roll. Axl Rose commented, "We've just finished our
4 shows in New York and had an amazing time. New York has always been special
and it feels great to be doing this again particularly in front of so many
friends. I am very excited about Europe and getting back over here in
September."
If these shows are anything to go by this tour is going
turn up the heat this summer in the UK. This will be the first time the band has
toured in the UK since the ‘Use Your Illusion/Get In The Ring’ tour in 1993. On
the infamous ‘Use Your Illusion/Get In The Ring’ Tour of the early 90’s, the
band performed 92 shows in 27 countries over 26 months, playing to an incredible
7 million people.
Guns N’ Roses will be joined on the tour by special
guests, Bullet For My Valentine.
You can now reserve your top price seats, pre-show dining with drinks available
throughout the evening from a private paid bar, private toilets and cloakroom
and complimentary parking in reserved spaces. Hospitality packages for Guns N'
Roses in the Arena Club are available for purchase for parties of 6 or more,
priced £100 per person. For more information on the menu and reserve your
package call Lynn Gill on 0114 256 55 68 or email

GUNS N' ROSES FRONTMAN
UNABLE TO COMPLETE LONDON SHOW;
SEBASTIAN BACH STEPS IN
Former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach sang lead vocals for the
last two songs ("Night Train" and "Paradise City") of GUNS N'
ROSES' set at the Wembley Arena in London, England on Sunday (July 30) after
singer Axl Rose was taken ill and was unable to finish the show. The band
performed an abbreviated set which reportedly featured no new songs, a departure
from the rest of the tour where several "Chinese Democracy" numbers were
regularly aired at every performance. *
In other news, GUNS N' ROSES played a special acoustic gig late
Saturday/early Sunday at a small London club called Koko, featuring a crowd made
up in part of audience members from GUNS N' ROSES first Wembley Arena
performance on Saturday (July 29) who had their names read out by Axl
during the show. The acoustic gig reportedly started at 4:00 a.m. and finished
at about 5:30 a.m.
The July 30 Wembley concert was the final show of GUNS N' ROSES' lengthy
European tour, which kicked off May 25 in Madrid, Spain.
* New songs 'I.R.S.', ' The Blues', and 'Better' were later reported as
having been played.
SCUZZ TV REVIEW OF WEMBLEY SHOW (7-30-2006)
That’s it now… Axl and his crew ended their tour with a kick ass show last night
at Wembley Arena.
Sebastian Bach kick-started the night (albeit an hour late), and reminded us
just why he is so good! The backstage staff weren’t exactly up to scratch- but
it was definitely entertaining as you sang along to Skid Row classics and Bach
swearing at the roadies! Pure entertainment!
Then there was Bullet for my Valentine… Fantastic lighting, grate guitar riffs
and class A vocals… but before we know it- Bullet were off stage without even
singing ‘All these things….’ and we were left waiting for another 45 minutes…
The tubes had stopped running and enthusiasm dies…as we stood up to grab a cab
home the arena darkened and the melodic riffs of Welcome to the Jungle echoed
through the crowd… There was no going home now!
Axl ran on stage and screeched in the only way Axl can, and the crowd went wild!
Special guests arrived on stage, much like Download Festival, but no new songs
were sang... only pure GNR classics…
Each guitarist had his own solo part of the show…but we cringed in sheer
disgusted embarrassment for them all as we had to endure their take on Christina
Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ (without the singing, thankfully!) But it did get to the
point where as soon as Axl introduced someone we would have a sit down as we
knew they just couldn’t live up to the original members, however when Don’t Cry
was played they totally redeemed themselves and everyone seemed to accept the
rest of the guys!
All in all, the gig was amazing, and at one point we felt like we were back ten
years earlier… but that was soon dashed when the solo of November rain was
changed slightly and the crowd booed… I know it’s not the same line up anymore
but you just don’t change a classic riff because you feel like it!!!
With fireworks, and confetti (yes, we know- we cringed too) Axl disappeared
halfway through Night Train and Bach flew on stage finishing up on a high with
Paradise City… But where was Axl? His manager, very kindly, told the crowd that
Axl was sick and couldn’t finish the gig- but he didn’t want to cancel- so he
struggled through and made it so far…
The whole night was amazing, and seeing Axl Rose cry lyrics with such a powerful
voice, even after all these years, was a truly rewarding experience. We know he
gets a lot of crap from the press, of course he does- he’s famous and, well,
eccentric- and an easy target! But no one can say he didn’t cut it on tour, nor
can they criticise the fact that he arrived late most of the time- Its Axl Rose…
It’s expected!

Billboard Review:
November 01, 2006,
Guns N' Roses Rocks, Infuriates In Jacksonville
Jeff Vrabel, Jacksonville, Fla.
Even on a sticky Halloween night in Florida, with much of the crowd in costume
and spooky holiday decor swinging from the rafters, nothing could quite
out-weird the main spectacle: watching 1/8th of Guns N' Roses perform a batch of
20-year-old smashes -- as well as a few from a record originally slated for
release during the first Clinton administration -- in front of, among other
things, a large and inflatable Homer Simpson balloon.
Welcome to the jungle, kids. We've got fun and games.
Or, more accurately, welcome to whatever this is. Well, what do you call this
ragged Frankenstein's monster of a band these days: GNR of the 21st Century?
Guns Minus Everyone But Axl? The GNR Experience Feat. Mr. Rose And His Band Of
Merry Pranksters? Or, in a time when nostalgia rock is about the only safe bet,
when Queen can tour without Freddie and half of the Who is one of the biggest
games in town, is 2006 Guns N' Roses merely another case of Hardly Authentic But
Good Enough?
Needless to say, one puts up with a lot in catching the remnants of GNR these
days (to be fair, it's actually 1/4th of the classic lineup, if you count
keyboardist Dizzy Reed). There's the wacky stage time (a classically Rose-ian
midnight on a Tuesday), the wearying wait for an alleged new record and the
small matter of all the Guns exiles who don't come around anymore.
But maybe the strangest thing is that for all its some-assembly-required vibe,
Rose's band knows how to tear up an arena show. Sure, these are hired hands, and
Slash would be pleased to know that Rose requires three guitarists to
replace/recreate him: ex NIN-ster Robin Finck, now a dead ringer for Matisyahu;
journeyman Richard Fortus; and, replacing Buckethead, Ron Thal, who goes by
Bumblefoot. You can't make this stuff up. But these guys bring the noise.
Moreover, Rose, impossibly, frustratingly, remains as galvanizingly watchable a
frontman as you're likely to find anywhere. The charisma? Enviably intact. The
vocals? Strained, but often thrilling. The drive is back, too -- sometime
between Guns' aborted 2002 run and today, Rose relocated his give-a-damn, and he
prowls the stage with an intensity and ambition that sometimes outweighs his
reach, but is crazy to witness. When he's on and his voice is doing age-defying
triple salchows on "Welcome to the Jungle" and "It's So Easy," he's cornrowed
lightning.
And for about half of the two-hour set, that's all you really need. Tracks like
"Jungle," "Mr. Brownstone" and even "Live and Let Die" are meteor impacts -- so
much so, in fact, that Rose adhered almost exclusively to songs from about 1987.
This night, he was solely interested in the most glorious of the glory days,
bringing out the big, boozy, misogynistic WMDs from "Appetite" ("Nightrain,"
"Out Ta Get Me," "My Michelle") -- and only invited songs from the "Use Your
Illusion" discs that originated in the "Appetite" era, like "November Rain" and
"You Could Be Mine." He's consciously blacking out a decent chunk of catalog
here.
But all the grand setup leads into a weird payoff. Because after a massive
opening salvo, reality begins to creep in with "Better," allegedly the first
single from the new album (the expensive-looking Eastern backdrop indicated Rose
remains apparently serious about this "Chinese Democracy" thing). Chunky riffs
aside, "Better," charitably speaking, ain't no "Brownstone." And due to lots of
things -- that inhospitable stage time (for which a smirking Rose denied
credit), his penchant for vanishing from the stage for long stretches (though it
added to his enigmatic legacy, one begins to wonder if he's really up to this)
and pacing issues, the show begins to grow cold and distant, despite the valiant
efforts of its frontman.
Oh, and this keeps coming up, too: Who the hell are these people?
Rose's minions are dressed like a ragtag pomo art outfit: keyboardist Chris
Pittman's in an ivory-white suit, Tommy Stinson rocks plaid pants, and
Bumblefoot has the name Bumblefoot. All have creative Tomorrowland haircuts (it
was hard to tell what was a Halloween costume and what wasn't). But Rose has
them faithfully recycle songs and solos as recorded by another guy 20 years ago.
He takes great pains to project a vibe of forward-thinking, then consents to a
jarring cameo by cornball Sebastian Bach, who in his opening set performs a song
called "Love Is a Bitch Slap" to emphasize all you don't miss about buttless-chaps
metal.
He adheres to a schedule of L.A. rock club ethics that doesn't so much apply in
Jacksonville early in the week. And he grants all three guitarists interminable,
momentum-killing solos; Fortus used his to jam on Christina Aguilera's
"Beautiful," and you weren't sure what his intentions were, much like you're not
sure what Rose's are.
Axl is capable of transcendent power: "Paradise City" seethed and roared, "You
Could Be Mine" worked up a mighty head of steam and if there's a better way to
open a rock show than with "Welcome to the Jungle," someone E-mail me about it.
And Rose seemed to be alternately salivating at and resentful of the challenge
of carrying this load on his shoulders.
But to what end? In the sense that anticipation is generally better than the
experience (I'm looking at you, god-awful "Star Wars" prequels), the mystique of
Rose's alleged "Democracy," if you're not bored of the entire episode in the
first place, will spot-evaporate the day it's released. One wonders if Rose
wouldn't be better served to leave it in the can until he's 60 and then bingo,
it's "Smile."
In those glory days, Guns N' Roses was just about as good it got. But its hole
card now is an album that might not exist, and once "Democracy" rises and falls,
Guns N' Roses, which can now maintain a spooky sense of mystery, will be very
likely trading the night train for the nostalgia train, whoever the hell's in
it. But in the meantime, GNR still can rock your night, or early morning, with a
primal power. Just bring a friend to help carry along the baggage.
Here is Guns N' Roses set list:
"Welcome To The Jungle"

JACKSONVILLE TIMES-UNION REVIEW :
Guns N' Roses puts on
good -- not great -- show
By ROGER BULL, The Times-Union
There is something about standing there at 1:30 in the morning, listening to yet
another guitar solo but knowing you're not going to leave until you hear
Paradise City. Yes, Guns N' Roses did make it to the Jacksonville Veterans
Memorial Arena on Tuesday night and put on a good -- but not great -- show.
All you needed was a little Patience.
It wasn’t the full, original band, of course. But Axl Rose was there, and that's
who they came to see. They just had to wait until midnight to see him.
The whole delay thing started at the beginning. Though the concert was scheduled
to begin at 8 p.m., the doors didn't open until 7:30. So hundreds of people
stood in line, listening to a monotonous recording telling them over and over
that guns, knives and clubs were prohibited. The crowd was mostly in their 20s
and 30s, but there were plenty several decades past that. Though fans had been
encouraged to wear costumes on that Halloween night, not too many did.
There weren't more than 1,000 people in arena when 8 p.m. rolled around. Ticket
sales had been slow but had reportedly picked up when prices had cut $13-$27. At
8:35, 35 minutes late, former Skid Row front man Sebastian Bach took the stage
with his band. They played for a little more than an hour, a mix of Skid Row
hits and some new songs.
Bach tried hard, you had to give him that. He still has his screaming pipes, and
he went through all the requisite hair metal moves: Pumping his fist in the air,
tossing his long blond hair and spinning the microphone. But the music just lay
there flat like, well, old hair metal. Except when he played his bigger hits
Monkey Business and Youth Gone Wild, he didn’t get the crowd very excited.
Instead, he had to implore them to sing along, to jump up and down, even to
applaud.
After Bach, there was a good 55-minute delay before Papa Roach came on. There
didn't seem to be much work going on with the equipment. We just waited.
But when they did come on at 10:35, they got rocking right away with She Loves
Me Not. The band was incredibly tight and energetic, all four fused into one
solid beat. Vocalist Jacoby Shaddix even went out in the crowd on a couple of
songs. More music, less posing and definitely a notch above Bach. They even got
a mosh pit going on general admission floor.
By the time Papa Roach finished up with Last Resort, it was pushing 11:30. And
it was midnight before Guns N' Roses came on. Keep in mind that if you were 18
when Appetite for Destruction came out in 1987, you are now 37 years old. And
you may just have, you know, a job, a family. In fact, while most of the lower
level was full by the time GNR took the stage, the crowd did thin during their
two-hour set.
Axl and the guys (of which only keyboardist Dizzy Reed dates back to when they
last produced an album) kicked it off right with Welcome to the Jungle. It was
Axl Rose, all right. He's sporting a corn-row pony tail these days and he's a
little heavier. He is, after all, 44. But the old moves are still there: the
hop, the spin and the snake dance. He’s still energetic, running from one side
of the stage to the other.
The voice, well, sometimes it sounded fine, especially on the shriek that sounds
like nothing but him. Other times, it seemed to break and disappear completely
and it was impossible to tell if it was him or the electronics that was failing.
On the softer tunes like Patience and Knockin' on Heaven's Door, it's clearly a
rougher, less agile voice than we remember.
At it's best, the concert was very good. It was, after all, Axl Rose up there
singing some of the better songs in rock. And in the full two-hour set, he did
just about all that you could ask for. At its worst, there were too many long
guitar solos by guitarists are who not as good as Slash and who threw in too
many silly theatrics. "Look, I can play my guitar when it's down by my ankles!"
When the band ended at 1:50 a.m., more of the crowd left, not waiting for the
encore they knew would be Paradise City. The band came back quickly for its
encore, and did a first-class version of a great rock 'n roll song.
Fireworks went off behind the stage, confetti blew out over the crowd that still
remained on the floor.
That was worth waiting for.

HUNTINGTON HERALD-DISPATCH REVIEW :
Send in your Guns N' Roses concert photos
Friday night's Guns N' Roses concert at the Big Sandy Superstore
Arena ran long and late, and we hope you will share some of your photos. E-mail
them to
news@herald-dispatch.com.
Meanwhile, enjoy the gallery to the right and Chris Mitchell's review.
By CHRIS MITCHELL
Meet the friendlier, more tranquil Axl Rose: The version who says thank you a
lot, high-fives fans in the audience, jokes around with band members on stage,
dances, smiles - he even starts his shows on time.
It wasn't the version concertgoers to the Big Sandy Superstore Arena may have
expected to meet during Friday night's epic, 5 1/2 hour concert featuring
headliners Guns N' Roses and high-energy opening acts Papa Roach and Sebastian
Bach, but they left satisfied and happily exhausted nonetheless.
Fortunately, and a bit surprisingly, this version of the fiery frontman
emerged from the darkness of the stage before an enthralled crowd of roughly
6,500 on this seventh night of the "Chinese Democracy" tour.
Though much has been made of the late start times on this tour - with Rose
rarely starting previous shows before midnight - he was prompt during his
Huntington visit, beginning the show shortly after 11 p.m.
The enigmatic vocalist seemed happy to be on stage and worked hard to please
the audience.
"I know it's cliché to ask this, but how are you all doin'?," he asked during
a brief break in the band's set. "It looks like you're having a good time, which
is helping us out. So keep that spirit going."
Rose charmed a captivated audience as he snake-danced, whirled, and swayed
throughout the band's 21-song, 2-hour-and-45-minute, continuous set that drew
heavy portions of 20-year-old favorites from the classic "Appetite for
Destruction" album, a couple cuts from the "Use Your Illusion" era, and a
four-song selection from the ridiculously long-delayed "Chinese Democracy," an
album that has been in production for nine years and has been estimated to cost
$15 million.
Cartoonish ex-Skid Row lead screamer Sebastian Bach kicked off the night with
a one-hour set featuring heavily from his former band's material, with a handful
of new songs mixed in for good measure. Dressed in tight, black leather pants, a
black vest and white cowboy boots, Bach swung his microphone overhead as he
head-banged to cuts like "Slave to the Grind," "18 and Life," and "Youth Gone
Wild." Stopping only briefly to introduce each new song, Bach peppered the
audience with a barrage of F-bombs and quirky one-liners. The audience reacted
well to Bach's act and the vocalist left the stage to a loud hand.
Perhaps the least enviable slot on the bill belonged to nu-rockers Papa Roach
wedged between the classic rock sounds of both Bach and Guns. The audience
seemed to take a wait-and-see approach with the band, and it wasn't until the
band's third song, "She Loves Me Not," from 2002's "lovehatetragedy" album, that
they broke through. The band worked through their catalog of rock hits,
including "Getting Away with Murder" and "Last Resort," as vocalist Jacoby
Shaddix led audience members in a Bono-esque sing-a-long to new tracks like
"...To Be Loved" and "Time Is Running Out."
Of course, the night was reserved for Axl and his
seven-man band.
"Do you know where you are?" Rose screamed the famous opening line from Guns'
incendiary 1987 hit "Welcome to the Jungle," kickstarting this last portion of
the show.
The crowd answered with an anticipatory roar as new guitarist Robin Finck
echoed the opening riff throughout the arena and a single spotlight careened off
Rose's jet-black glasses and matching silk shirt.
Finck, the longest-incumbent guitarist in the new Guns N' Roses fold and who
swung his ax previously in Nine Inch Nails, sported a scraggly beard and untamed
mane that reminded you of Jimmy Page's brief, bearded moment during the Zoso
album era.
In addition to Finck, other Guns members are long-time keyboardist Dizzy
Reed, who joined the band before the "Use Your Illusion" double albums in 1992;
bassist Tommy Stinson, formerly of the Replacements; fusion guitarist and
composer Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal"; keyboardist Chris Pitman; and former Love Spit
Love members Richard Fortus on guitar and Frank Ferrer on drums, the latter of
whom is filling in on this tour for Bryan "Brain" Mantia who is currently
spending time with his wife and their newborn daughter.
A bit heavier now and old enough to be the dysfunctional dad to many younger
Guns N' Roses fans in attendance Friday, Rose then guided his band of hired Guns
through a 21-song,
2 hour-and-45-minute marathon of fist-pumping heavy rock-n-roll to the delight
of many nostalgia-tripping 40-somethings and their kids - many of whom must have
come into the show wondering what they had missed out on some 15 years ago when
Rose was revered as the biggest, most controversial rock star in the world.
The audience maintained a high energy level throughout the show as the band
tore through a set allowing room to showcase their wide-ranging musical
abilities. They might not have been Duff, Izzy, Slash, and Matt backing up Axl
Friday night, but to their credit this is a very competent unit assembled to
crank out Guns' tunes with a similar tenacity.
Rose fed off the crowd's raucousness and showed many patrons in attendance
why he is still considered a captivating frontman. His aging voice cracked and
strained to hit high notes in songs like "My Michelle" and "Sweet Child O'
Mine," but his 44-year-old frame showed no signs of fatigue as he sprinted from
side-to-side of the stage to shake hands with fans, exciting those especially in
the first few rows.
The show ended with the fitting "Paradise City," another hit from the 1987
"Appetite for Destruction" album. That album alone has sold more than 25 million
copies worldwide.
The song marked an appropriate ending to a night that so many Tri-State rock
fans never envisioned happening. This was, after all, only the second time Guns

Right after Mr. Brownstone Axl said, you can’t blame my sorry ass tonight for
the delay. After NR Axl said, you guys are great tonight and thank you for it
but if a few people don’t stop throwing things on the stage they will go home.
After one of the songs Axl said, again you guys are great tonight maybe we might
do something diffent and also said, I think we will be staying here awhile.
During My Michelle when Bach came out he said, what do you think NJ want Axl to
live here also? Axl said, something like you never know. During Nightrain when
Axl was on the right side of the stage he almost got hit be something. I think
they may have cut the set one or two songs short because of it. I was on the
floor in the VIP section on the right side of the stage in row two by the
machine that shots the paper out at the end of Paradise City. Well next up MSG
and then Baltimore.

TONIGHT'S GUNS N' ROSES SHOW IN PORTLAND, MAINE IS CANCELLED
Sanctuary Press Release
Tonight's show at the Cumberland County Civic
Center has been cancelled due to limitations imposed by local fire marshals.
A band spokesperson commented, "Axl and the
band are very unhappy about not being able to play for the fans in Portland but
have been advised after several meetings with local fire marshals Nelson Collins
and Bob Cadigan that they have made it impossible for the band to perform their
show to the usual high standards that their fans deserve.
More importantly, we have been informed that
officials intend to enforce rules and regulations that should not and do not
apply in this venue. Our production manager and crew have been in this building
with Clay Aiken and Green Day and none of the restrictions imposed on Guns N'
Roses were experienced by those artists. It is our opinion that they are going
out of their way to target and single out Guns N' Roses and the band's loyal
fans. Following consultation with the band's manager, agent and promoter, it was
felt that it was best to cancel the show. It is a regrettable decision,
particularly at this late notice, but it is of paramount importance that our
fans have the best experience possible without being harassed and threatened.
We look forward to continuing the tour in
Worcester on Wednesday."
